Moulded edge

Post Posted: 23.10.2007 19:03

I think this is only for visualisation, but what is simplest way of making a mould (say ovolo) on an edge?

What I currently do is put concave head onto (wide) timber, move into appropriate position in model & then do collision test.

Is there a better way?

For moldings and other complex shapes, I normally draw the cross section of the member with lines, and then use the extrude command (2-5) to add length to it. This works quite well, and allows you to make all sorts of odd shapes, including ogees and the like.

There may be easier ways, but this how I've been doing it.

I'll try that - presume no way to get this into machine file?

Hi Piers

No - no way to get that kind of detail (an ovolo type moulding that is) on to a K2 I'm afraid.

But if it's just for visualisation, then Joe's method is definately the best and most flexible- if a bit cumbersome. But you can draw your profile in PlanCAD and import it and then just extrude.

Cheers

Rob

Or - if the profile is used several times - make the section in the material database. First draw it in Plancad, so you can get the coordinates you need.

I must say I don't know what is a moulded (ovolo) edge is??? Confused

Hi – the easiest way I’ve found to do this is to create the profile in the material database (as Thorvald says) but it is especially helpful if you want to use the profile for future projects – the main problem is getting curves on the profile. I make this up with a series of small straight lines.

I also - I should make a handrail with rounded edges, so I made the rounding with a number of straight lines. That is the same, as the program does, if you make a tube or column with circular section.
