Looking for a laptop.

Post Posted: 24.11.2006 10:20

I am looking for a laptop - and this laptop should of course be able to run Dietrichs and OpenGL with smooth elegance.... Smile I understand that the grapfic card is important for this - and at the same time I would like a small laptop - 12" screen, under 2 kg weigth. Take a look at these:

1) Amitech Freenote 5480 12"-S.
Screen: 12,1" WIDE TFT WXGA, Clearscreen.
Resolution: 1280x800, WXGA.
Grapfics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator(GMA) 900.
Processor: Intel® Pentium M Centrino, 2,1Ghz 770.
Memory: 2 GB SODIMM DDR RAM (2x1 GB).
Harddrive: 160 GB 2,5" HDD.

2) Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Si 1520.
Screen: 12,0" LCD WXGA CrystalView, ISO 13406-2 class II.
Resolution: 1280x800, WXGA.
Grapfics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 integrated in Intel 945GM chipset, up to 128 MB (shared). Supports DX9. Dynamic Video memory technology (DVMT) 3.0 support. Intel smart 2D display technology.
Processor: F.ex.: Intel® core 2 duo, T7200 (2.0 GHz, 667 MHz, 4 MB L2 cache). Or Intel Centrino Duo.
Memory: 2 GB SODIMM DDR RAM (2x1 GB).
Harddrive: 120 GB SATA HDD (5400 RPM).

Possible alternatives if small size laptops will not fullfill the graphichs requirments:

3) Fujitsu-Siemens Celsius H240.
Screen: 15,4" WUXGA.
Resolution: 1920x1200, WUXGA.
Grapfics: ATI Mobility FireGL V5200, 256/512 MB. Professional 256 / 512 MB OpenGL PCI-Express workstation graphics.
Processor: F.ex.: Intel® core 2 duo, up to T7600 (4 MB, 667 Intel 945PM Express). Or Intel Core Duo, up to T2700.
Memory: Max. 4 GB, DDR-2 667 / 533 SODIMM.
Harddrive: 100 GB SATA HDD (7200 RPM).

4) Amitech FreeNote 5680 15,4 Wide-S.
Screen: 15,4".
Resolution: 1280x800, WXGA.
Grapfics: ATI Mobility Radeon X1600, 256 MB.
Processor: AMD Turion64.
Memory: 2 GB,SODIMM DDR RAM (400 MHz).
Harddrive: 160 GB.

Some comments on those laptops would be nice! Smile And what is best of the new processors "2 Duo" or "Duo"??

Hi Thorvald

I would go with the bigger screen. I know it's more weight but unless you plan to hook up to a larger monitor, you'll really feel the benefit.

I would go with a dual core processor, an ATI (or nVidia) graphics card and at least 2GB of ram.

Beyond this size of graphics card memory, processor speed and additional RAM are going to be financially driven decisions and by and large will not affect the performance of Dietrich's, but may well affect the machine's overall perfomance if are are planning on using lots of Software at the same time.

As usual, the main bit of advice (however meaningless) is to get the best you can afford!

HTH

Cheers

Rob

Hi Mr. Thorvald,

take a processor with 1 GB RAM or higher ( the core 2 duo is the
better one ) and a graphic card with 256 MB or higher.

Don´t take a celeron processor or a graphic card with shared
memory.

Hello - and thank you for your answers till now!

I can use a 12" screen for drawing - no problem - but it seems like it is impossible to find those small size laptops with the very good graphic cards. For some reason (I wonder why) the small laptops are not equipped with the better graphics.

One of the comments is that I should not choose laptops, that use shared memory on the graphic card - I thought all laptops use shared memory (but maybe no longer?).

Are the graphics in the two small laptops (1) & (2), that I mentioned strong enough to run Dietrichs OpenGL smoothly??

The laptop (3) seems to be the strongest choice, with specific support of OpenGL.

If the two fist laptops (1) & (2) are not strong enough - is it possible to find any small size laptop that are strong enough??

Hello Thorvald,
I use an Acer laptop with a Pentium 4 Processor with 3000 Ghz, a N-Vidia graphic card with 128 MB and 512 MB DDRAM. The very best of it, is the 17" TFT- Display, ideal for graphic works. The performance of the laptop is pretty good, there are no problems with the open GL Mode.
I think, the dual core with 2 processors is much better, take such a one and not a celeron, too slowly

This Graphic card would be fine for Dietrisch Software:

ATI Mobility Radeon X1350 with up to 384MB HyperMemory - 128 MB

??

Found it in a 12" notebook.

Why you want big screen? This is not for desktop replacement, but to bring on travel. And 12" is big enough for drawing and serious working - to my opinion. So is the graphic card in the mentioned LG good for Dietrichs?

I do not think, that 12" is enough. Which resolution can you show on it? If it has not as many pixels as your office pc, then you must define new icon bars. You cannot use the icon bars, that you are used to find at their place, because on a smaller screen you cannot see them all. Some of them will disappear behind the right margin.
If the 12" display should have the same number of pixels, you cannot read any text without using very strong glasses Shocked Confused Shocked

In case of update, you can never copy the settings from office pc to laptop, so you always have to update the software twice.

Hi Thorvald,
my rule for screens is: Bigger is better Wink
And also the handling is better with an normal desktop, with a laptop there are compromises, no mouse and no normal (what´s the english name for tastatur) Smile

Re: Looking for a laptop.

And the Danish for tastatur / keyboard is: Tastatur... Laughing

The screen resolution is 1280x800. I know the icons and text might get smaller etc. etc. - but please remember that I am not talking about a desktop replacement. My desktop is with 19" flat screen - I don't remember what resolution, probably 1280x1024, so the resolution width is the same.

I don't think icons will dissaper behind the right margin, but perhaps they will regroup. But that doesn't matter so much for me. I don't think I am going to use it very much for drawing - but I am going to the Philippines in 1 month in July, and I was thinking I could use some of the time to work. I have had a 12" laptop (some years ago) that I used without problems also for autocad - but at that time I had only laptop and no desktop computer.

No mouse and normal keyboard for laptop - why not it is almost the same and of course I will use normal mouse, and I have a wireless keypad for numeric use, that I can use with the laptop. I don't think it will be a problem. And again: It is not a desktop replacement.

So again (and again) I ask: Is the graphics in this laptop good for Dietrichs work??

See: nordic.lge.com/dk/prod...t+a+model#

See also M1, that could be an alternative: nordic.lge.com/dk/prod...l=NOTHING#

But I prefer Z1 for mobility.
