Help with tennon process

Post Posted: 09.07.2009 15:44

I have a signature curve I do with most of my work. Its like a Japanese style girt on a gable end.

I create this by drawing it then use the extrude function in dcam to turn it into a 3d piece of wood. When I draw in the king posts, and then add a tenon to it, it does not account for the curve in the wood. Sometimes it even says "Connection not possible"

Any idea what is going on here? Any way to get the drawing to look tight?

My clients are always asking what is going on with that when I show them the 3d renderings.

Hello kablamnetworks,

the processes in D-CAM only take into account the "rough" beam without any other processes. That is why you get the gap in the tenon connection. You can help yourself by creating an "assisting beam" parallel to the collar with a small height so that top surface of the assisting beam just touches the surface of the curve. You then create the tenon between the post an the assisting beam, explode the tenon connection in "single beam". Now you can delete the assisting beam and notch out the mortise in the curved beam.

Best regards,

Jens

Then to get the mortise through the curved beam you could try using the mortise function assigned from the smart tag library. I think that will do the mortise for you.

For joinery to work on an extruded beam you must extrude the beam correctly. Normally the X axis must be the beam length.

Once extruded you can also use the "Housing" input found under the "Reduction" tab in the tenon command. This will account for the curve in the beam. You need to measure the amount of housing needed as seen in the video below.
