Compound Housing Confusion

Post Posted: 07.05.2007 19:35

I have a standard valley (both roof pitches the same, interesecting at 90 degrees), that runs down into a common rafter. I would like to house the valley into the common at the tail end with a 1" housing, leading edges cut square.

I cannot figure out how to do this joint (other than by intersecting volumnes). Any advice? The compound housing 3-8-6 doesn't seem to work since the ground cut is not parallel to the common rafter...

A simplified version is attached. Please help!

Hi JMiller,

the process you want to have cannot be done on any Joinery machine. If you want to handcraft it manually in the shop, please use "2-7-1 intersecting volumes".

Best regards,

Jens

Most every frame I do is handcut, so, it works out fine to do intersecting volumes.

Only, I change my mind at times, and it is hard to get rid of 2-7-1 "notch" later on in life. I'll just wait until the very end to do those, I reckon.

Much obliged,

Joe

That is not too difficult, did you ever try dicam 3-1-8?
This will delete all "intersection notches" of one beam. (It's not possible to delete them single.)

Joe, to remove cuts or notches made with 2-7-1 use 3-1-8 machine only. But this will remove all of them from the entire beam/timber that you select....

Along these lines - any way to have a valley rafter keep an "ear" or is that also a problem solved only with intersecting volumes? Many thanks!

There is a cutting tool 3-4-9. If the valley rafter meets a rectangular edge of an other beam, it will get an "ear".

It seems, that programmers like to play with numbers and disorder them sometimes... Wink

Some numbers were changed as the program improved.

Steve, place the valley into the other rafter and use the birdsmouth cut and I may give you the "ear" you want.

Skype me if you need help.
