Intersecting volumes.

Post Posted: 26.11.2007 08:56

Hi. Why is it sometimes not possible to use intersecting volumes to make cuts? I want to cut away a piece of the flange in a IPE steel profile - in all other places it worked, but in one place it doesn't work, and this simply irritates me. Are there other ways to do it? Or why sometimes intersecting volumes does not work??

Hi Thorvald,

these problems are cause by so called "precision problems". You can try to use the function "2-7-4 Precision" to change the precision with which the shape of a volume is calculated before using the volume intersection function. Just try a higher or lower level of precision (it is hard to say exactly which value you have to enter), sometimes it helps.

Best regards,

Jens

Aaah, thank you - finally I got the cut I wanted. Very Happy

Is tweaking precision a solution to standard joinery processes sometimes not appearing on a volume? I can sometimes go into single beam info and move processes around to get the desired result and am wondering if this phenomenon is related or if something else is going on.

Thanks,
Steve

Sometimes it helps, but in most cases it doesn't help.
In most cases I am sucessful with changing process length about 0,0001 m, especially when 2 processes meet or are very close together at one point.

Thanks. What length do you change? For example if you have two housed mortise/tenon at the same height on a post do you explode one and change length of notch? The funny thing is I can have two identical posts with exact processes (exept they are mirrored) and one has all processes visible and the other doesn't. I guess at some level in the process engine it has to do with which reference face is being used.

In general does it matter what order processes appear on a volume, ie bottom up or top down or notches last, etc.

Thanks again, Steve.

I do not often have these problems, so I did not find a rule that always fits.
In very few cases, I could not solve the visual problems. The processes were written to the machine file, and visual perfection would only waste time...

I've run into the same problem as well, with certain processes not showing up, but being there in the single beam info.

Unfortunately if you are creating single beam drawings (for people to cut it the old-fashioned way), the processes don't show up... Although sometimes they do.

I've run into the invisible joinery often on a recent project. Der planer's solution of tweaking the joinery by a very small amount was a good way to get the job done.

I think, it's a 3D precision and/or mathematical problem.

Der Planer says: I think, it's a 3D precision and/or mathematical problem.

Sounds like a good challenge for Dietrich's skilled programmers - I doubt Spidey need get involved. Very Happy Let us know if you find a cure.

You're entirely.

I'm actually quite in awe with what computer programers can make a computer do. And I tip my hat to this forum for providing answers to questions I couldn't find in a Help menu. Laola
